France to Summon US Ambassador Over Antisemitism Allegations
In a bold move, France has announced plans to summon the US ambassador to Paris, Charles Kushner, amidst what it deems as unacceptable allegations of failing to address a concerning surge in antisemitism.
Kushner, a prominent figure within the Jewish community and father-in-law to US President Donald Trump, expressed his concerns in a scathing open letter to French President Emmanuel Macron published in the Wall Street Journal.
Aligning himself with Israel’s recent critique of France, Kushner pointed to a disturbing rise in hatred towards Jews in the country following the conflict in Gaza.
“France vehemently denies these accusations, deeming them unacceptable,” stated a foreign ministry spokesperson, indicating that Kushner is expected to make an appearance on Monday.
Within his letter, the ambassador urged Macron to temper his criticisms of Israel and highlighted instances of antisemitism that have plagued French society for far too long.
“In France, acts of violence against Jews, desecration of synagogues and schools, and vandalism of Jewish-owned establishments have unfortunately become commonplace. Even preschools have reported incidents of antisemitism,” Kushner lamented.
He also expressed readiness to collaborate with Macron and other French officials in devising a comprehensive strategy to combat this pressing issue.
The ministry emphasized the boundaries set by the 1961 Vienna Convention, which restricts ambassadors from intervening in a country’s internal affairs.
Kushner’s letter echoed sentiments expressed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who penned a similar letter to Macron the previous week, accusing the French leader of inadvertently fueling antisemitism by advocating for international recognition of a Palestinian state.
France is gearing up to formally acknowledge Palestine in September, a move that Macron believes is crucial for regional stability and peace.
Macron, a staunch advocate against antisemitism, has bolstered security measures to safeguard Jewish institutions in response to incidents linked to the Gaza conflict.
Triggered by a Hamas attack in southern Israel in October 2023, the war in Gaza has resulted in significant casualties and widespread devastation.
Recent reports confirm a dire famine in Gaza City, with over half a million individuals facing life-threatening conditions of starvation and destitution, prompting international concern.
