MILAN — Tragedy Strikes as Three Sisters Drown in Central Mediterranean Crossing
In a heartbreaking turn of events, three young sisters lost their lives when the rubber boat they were on, along with dozens of other migrants, capsized during the perilous journey across the central Mediterranean from Libya to Italy, as reported by a German sea rescue group on Sunday.
RESQSHIP revealed that the bodies of the girls, aged 9, 11, and 17, were discovered inside the “dangerously overcrowded” boat, which had been battered by waves reaching up to 1.5 meters (4.9 feet) before rescuers could reach them.
Amidst the tragedy, the charity’s vessel Nadir managed to save 65 people, including three pregnant women, several children, and a seven-month-old baby.
Unfortunately, one individual went overboard earlier during the voyage and is still missing, according to RESQSHIP.
The overcrowded rubber boat had set sail from Zuwara, Libya, late Friday night. Alarm Phone, a hotline for migrants in distress, alerted RESQSHIP, which intercepted the vessel on Saturday.
Italy’s coast guard took 14 people, including those requiring medical attention and their families, to the island of Lampedusa for further assistance.
The Nadir later arrived ashore with the remaining survivors and the bodies of the three sisters. — Reports from Agencies
