Shocking: Ukraine accused of drone attack on nuclear plant on Independence Day

MOSCOW —

Accusations of Ukrainian Drone Strikes on Russian Nuclear Plant

Russia has pointed fingers at Ukraine for launching drone strikes overnight that caused a fire at a nuclear power plant in the Kursk region. This incident occurred as Ukrainians celebrated 34 years of independence from the former Soviet Union.

Damage and Response

According to Russian officials, multiple power and energy facilities were targeted in the strikes, resulting in damage to a transformer at the Kursk nuclear plant. Fortunately, the blaze was quickly brought under control with no casualties reported. Radiation levels at the plant remained within safe limits, as confirmed by the plant’s press office.

International Concern

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) expressed awareness of reports linking the fire to “military activity” but had yet to independently verify the specifics. IAEA chief Rafael Mariano Grossi emphasized the importance of safeguarding all nuclear facilities at all times.

Escalating Tensions

While Ukraine refrained from immediate comment on Russia’s claims, the situation escalated further as firefighters in Russia’s Leningrad region battled a blaze at the Ust-Luga port, allegedly sparked by debris from downed Ukrainian drones. Russia’s Defense Ministry asserted intercepting 95 Ukrainian drones across its airspace, while Ukraine’s air force claimed Russia launched counterattacks involving drones and a cruise missile.

Independence Day Celebrations

The drone incidents coincided with Ukraine’s Independence Day celebrations, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressing the nation in Kyiv’s Independence Square. Zelenskyy reaffirmed Ukraine’s resilience in the face of ongoing Russian aggression and emphasized the country’s determination to build a secure and peaceful future.

International Support

Amidst the conflict, U.S. special envoy Keith Kellogg attended the celebrations in Kyiv and was honored with the Ukrainian Order of Merit. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also arrived for discussions, while Norway pledged significant military aid, including support for Patriot air defense systems in partnership with Germany.

Continued Conflict

Despite diplomatic efforts, fighting persisted in eastern Ukraine, with Russia claiming territorial gains in the Donetsk region. Frontline clashes intensified as the conflict entered its third year. — Agencies
