Beijing Condemns US Tariffs on India!

China Opposes US Tariffs on India, Calls for Greater Co-operation

In a bold statement, Chinese ambassador to India Xu Feihong firmly opposed Washington’s steep tariffs on Delhi, likening the US to a “bully” and calling for increased co-operation between India and China.

Xu criticized the US for using tariffs as a “bargaining chip” to demand “exorbitant prices” from other nations, stating that China firmly opposes such actions. He emphasized that silence only emboldens the bully, referring to the US.

President Trump recently imposed a 25% penalty on India, in addition to 25% tariffs on oil and weapons from Russia. These tariffs will take effect on 27 August, causing strain in India’s trade relations with the US.

Despite the tensions with the US, India has defended its purchases of Russian oil, citing the need to protect millions of poor Indians from rising energy costs. The Biden administration had also encouraged India to buy Russian oil to stabilize global energy markets.

Rapid Thawing of India-China Relations

Amidst the trade tensions with the US, there has been a notable improvement in relations between India and China. Following the 2020 clashes in Galwan, both countries have been working towards normalizing ties.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently visited Delhi, emphasizing the need for India and China to view each other as partners rather than adversaries. Xu echoed similar sentiments, calling for unity between the two countries.

He described India and China as “double engines” of economic growth in Asia, highlighting that their collaboration benefits the world. Xu also invited Indian enterprises to invest in China, hoping for a fair and non-discriminatory business environment.

Support for Multilateral Trading System

Xu criticized the global tariff and trade wars, stating that China stands with India in upholding the multilateral trading system with the WTO at its core. He expressed optimism for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to China, believing it will strengthen China-India relations.

“Power politics and the law of the jungle are prevalent, and international rules and order have suffered severe impacts,” Xu remarked, alluding to Washington’s tariff measures. He emphasized the importance of unity and co-operation between India and China in the face of global economic challenges.

Overall, Xu’s statements reflect China’s commitment to fostering positive relations with India and advocating for a fair and inclusive international trade environment.
