Syrian Teams Control 80% of Wildfires in Northern Latakia!

Syrian Civil Defense Teams Battle Wildfires in Kessab

The wildfires in the Kessab area of northern Latakia province are being contained by Syrian civil defense teams, with 80% under control according to local authorities. Efforts are ongoing to cool hotspots and reach remote blazes in the region.

Abdul Kafi Kiyal, head of the Civil Defense Directorate in Latakia, stated that crews are currently focusing on monitoring and cooling operations in various fire zones, including Shajar al-Maabar and the Chalma junction.

The rugged terrain in Wadi al-Nabain near the village of al-Mashrafah is making it difficult to access remaining fire pockets, hindering full containment. Monitoring teams are conducting 24-hour surveillance until all active fires are extinguished, Kiyal noted.

Wildfires have been impacting Latakia and other Syrian provinces throughout the summer, fueled by extreme heat, prolonged drought, dense forest growth, and strong winds.

In July, mountain forests in Latakia were engulfed in flames for 12 consecutive days, resulting in over 16,000 hectares of woodlands and farmland being burned. The fires also caused damage to 45 villages and displaced nearly 1,200 families, as per official data. – Agencies
