New York Welcomes Shah Rukh Khan at the Met Gala
In a city that never sleeps, the Met Gala brought out one of the world’s most famous men, Shah Rukh Khan. Despite his global status, the Bollywood star couldn’t escape the nerves that come with strutting down the iconic Met Gala carpet.
Known affectionately as SRK by his fans, Khan made his Met Gala debut in a sleek and understated fashion. He opted for a floor-length black wool coat designed by Indian fashion maestro Sabyasachi Mukherjee. The ensemble was elevated with bold accessories, including a sparkling “K” pendant hanging from a chain and a gem-encrusted tiger head cane.
To ease his jitters, Khan, who admitted to being “very shy” and usually avoids red carpets, stuck to his comfort zone and requested Mukherjee to design something that reflected his personal style.
“I told Sabya I only wear black and white, but what we designed for me is what I’m most comfortable in,” Khan shared. “That’s how I think it should be.”
A veteran of over 100 films, Khan’s presence at the Met Gala was long overdue. Mukherjee emphasized the significance of Khan’s debut coinciding with the celebration of Black designers and the heritage of Black dandyism, a fashion movement intertwined with both style and politics.
“When you get a man like this on the red carpet, especially when it’s ‘Black dandy,’ representation is the most important thing,” Mukherjee stated. “We wanted to represent Shah Rukh Khan as Shah Rukh Khan, and nobody else.”
Mukherjee, a global fashion icon in his own right, aims to elevate his label Sabyasachi to India’s first global luxury brand. With glamorous gowns and saris adorning Bollywood royalty, his recent 25th-anniversary celebration showcased a collection inspired by his roots in West Bengal.
Accompanying Khan at the Met Gala was another Indian cinema luminary, Diljit Dosanjh. The revered musician and actor debuted on the Met Gala stage in a regal ensemble embroidered with a map of Punjab. Designed by Nepali-American fashion maven Prabal Gurung, Dosanjh’s maharaja-inspired outfit added a touch of grandeur to the star-studded event. – CNN
